Learning new skills as a stepping stone to employment

At 2econd Chance we believe everyone deserves a fair shot at work and should receive the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to succeed.

We offer workplace experience and training programmes in refurbishing unwanted IT hardware or picture framing to adults not in education, employment or training (NEET) and young people aged 16-25 with an Education Health Care Plan, who have been long-term excluded from the workplace.

Many of our trainees have learning difficulties, autism and social, emotional or mental health needs.

When they come to us trainees are carefully supported throughout their placement with us whether that be IT refurbishment or picture framing — whichever course interests them the most. Or they are welcome to try both.

Whichever discipline they choose, they get hands-on experience and the chance to learn new skills as a way of preparing them for the workplace.

Through their time with us, many trainees report enjoying having somewhere regular to come each week where they are seen, valued and taught new skills. This in turn gives them increased self belief and a greater preparedness and confidence to apply for jobs and enter the world of work.

Accredited IT qualification

Trainees participate in a 12-week IT refurbishment work experience placement where they learn how to repair and recondition donated laptops and devices in our friendly and inclusive workspace. If they want to continue this further they have the opportunity to enter our 50-hour Tech 10 programme, accredited with the British Computer Society.

Part of the circular economy

By refurbishing devices and using reclaimed materials for framing, we are part of the circular economy, helping to prevent waste from ending up in landfill.

Bridging the digital divide

A quarter of all our refurbished devices are donated back into the community to individuals and families that don’t have access to a laptop or mobile phone – helping to bridge the digital divide. The rest are sold at affordable prices through our online store

“B and A’s confidence has grown so much since coming to 2econd Chance. They won't be the same anymore. It has been such a positive change for them. The pride they took in doing their work — it was great for both of them. The confidence they both have now — I don't think that can ever be taken away from them.”
